My first completed TTRPG

After years of trying to make different tabletop rpg related content, it finally took me an interesting game jam to finally do it to the end.

This project helped me understand how to work more effectivelly and how sometimes research can widely change a whole project.

Indeed, Dirty dungeons done dirt cheap started out as a more traditional RPG based on Joe Dever’s rules, meant for multiple players with character progression and all, but this made me want to make it grow in scope multiple times, and at the rate I was going I probably wouldn’t have ever finished it.

On top of all that, the game just didn’t feel right, and I didn’t know why.

But one day, while looking at other TTRPG found on this site I realised that there was this whole set of games based on the same basic rule system for exploration-based solo games: the carta SRD.

I decided to try some of them out and found a very fun and quick to play rules system, that could easily be expanded and modified to the point that each games, while definitely a “carta” game, would feel completely different from one another.

This was it, I knew exactly why my game didn’t feel right: I tried to make a grand a full feature game, but my basis was meant for smaller and more to the point games. And with this shift, everything just went extremely smoothly extremely fast.

Digging a bit more into Joe Dever’s other games also gave me ideas on how to expand this one further, and I’ll soon start work on a non minimalist, more complete version of what I have here with D4C
